What
People Want
We who are in the people business, and that is just about everyone, need to
know a few things about other people. Here is our lesson for today.
~People love to be recognized, acknowledged,
validated. Direct eye contact in most cultures works, as does a cordial
greeting.
~Remember their name. If you know the
other person's name, by all means use it. Remembering a person's name
speaks volumes. It says "I honor you by remembering."
~People like kindness and courtesy. The
heart of this one is what is commonly called "The Golden Rule". (Do
unto others as you would have others do unto you.)
~Speak in terms of the other person's wants and
needs. This one is straight out of Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and
Influence People. We love to talk about self. Always remember that.
~Mary Kay Ash says this ... "Imagine that
every person you meet is wearing an invisible sign around
their neck. The sign says "Make Me Feel Important."
Class dismissed.
