Some Thoughts on Desire

We long for, we want, we desire, yes, we even crave for a thing.  That is desire.  Desire is a strong motivator.  It pushes us to do more, get out of bed earlier, work later, go places to learn information yet unknown.

We desire … therefore we are then able to achieve.

I’m writing today in terms of the good side of desire.  We all have a working knowledge of the dark side of desire, but let’s be different.

Desire keeps us moving toward a worthy objective.  Seth Godin offers some great insight: “Standing still is the riskiest plan of all.”
~What to Do when It’s Your Turn

Desire pushes you and me to work on our worthy ambitions.  I am able to write four blogs each week and then produce a podcast based on those blogs because of desire.  Desire is what gets me out of bed early most morning.  Desire propels me to read, and mull, and meditate and do everything else that is now a part of my personal agenda.

What is desire doing for you?  How badly do you want the thing you desire?  And the ultimate question is this … What are you going to do about that?

When desire is in play, reason steps aside.  I know of a man named Maxcy Filer from Compton, California who took the bar exam 48 times before passing it.  He had desire.  DESIRE.

He took it in San Francisco, LA, San Diego, Riverside and anywhere else in the state of California that offered the bar exam.

He spent $50,000 in testing fees, and it took him twenty-five years to finally pass the bar ... and he did.  He had DESIRE.

That’s what desire did for Maxcy.

What is desire doing for you?
Where is desire pushing you to go, to be, to conquer, to start, to stop and to become?

When great desire kicks in, nothing can stand against it.

Wayne Dyer gives us a final good word.

“Whatever has to be done,
it’s always your choice.”

I think that means desire starts with you and me.

Don't Fear Failure

After a lifetime of putting my hand to a variety of careers I’ve dimmed the effects of failure somewhat.  That is why I can embrace this thought and encourage you to do the same.

Where is the crime in failure?  Unless it is truly a criminal act, there is no crime in failing.  Read this:

Ah, I think we are on to something here.  Maybe our efforts have revolved around low aim, and that is a waste.

I am taking a bite out of the writing world.  Want to know what my lofty goal is?  I want to write the blog heard around the world.  I want to write words of hope. encouragement and inspiration that speak to the heart and soul of mankind.

I don’t always write a zinger of a post.  Sometimes my thoughts ramble, and I occasionally use the wrong tense and mix the tenses in my sentences, and sometimes I’ve let a few typos slip by. Nevertheless, my aim is firmly in mind.  My goals have not diminished.

I may fail along the way, but I’m rising back up, brushing myself off and trying again in my march to write something that will outlast me.

In my early days as a writer I feared pushing the “PUBLISH” button every time.  I was so afraid I might say something stupid, or have glaring errors that people would laugh at.

No more.

In my many attempts to be a writer, I’m had some amazing moments when my words have resonated with my audience, and they have let me know how meaningful something is that I wrote.

I may fail tonight in writing this, but look what I learn with every stroke of the keys and every flash of insight that comes my way.

I just don’t want to aim low and be a success.

Courage to Stumble

Wayne Gretzky is recognized as the greatest ice hockey player of all time.  He is famous for his stumble/bumble antics in practice on the ice.  He would intentionally lean over to the extreme just to see where his boundaries were, and try with all his might to pull himself out of those falls.  He dared to look foolish in practice so that he could hone his skills for game time.

Wayne knew this – You are not your mistakes.  We all have limits to our abilities.  It is our job to explore those limits and keep pushing the boundaries further away.  That is the path to success and skill building.

So what – you fell down today.  Tomorrow is another day with new opportunities to get it right.  Stand up, brush yourself off, and start all over again.

S = Stamina

(Our premise is this:  If plan A fails you still have twenty-five other options.)

Stamina is our “S” word in this series.  There are some great synonyms for “Stamina”.

Staying power
 Energy
  Endurance
   Resistance
    Resilience
     Strength
      Determination
       Vigor
        Doggedness
         Fortitude

We cannot avoid the “running a race” metaphor with this word.

~Stamina means we hang in there longer and stronger than anyone else.
~Stamina means we have a dogged determination to see this thing through.
~Stamina means we have conviction and fortitude that we are right.

~Stamina means we are determined to conquer.
~Stamina means we have a strong desire to survive, thrive and win.

~Stamina means we will resist whatever ill winds blow against us.
~Stamina means we will maintain our vigor till the end, and then we will tie a knot in it and hang on a little longer.

We love heroes with stamina, heroes who stand up one more time than their opponent.  In business, we love to see the underdog become the top dog.

WE      LOVE      STAMINA!

So how do we develop stamina?

It begins with the dream.
-How much do you buy into your dream?
-How many contingencies have you considered?
-How much reserve capital do you have, and can you get more?

-How much grit do you have?
-How strong is your desire to win, to be successful, and to build your
     dream?
-To whom do you turn when you are losing your grip?
-What and in whom do you find inspiration?

On a web site for developing stamina in health, I would like to borrow the gist of this article and apply these principles toward our business model.

1.  Eat healthy.  On what do you feed your mind? Who are your role models?
2.  If you need a lot of stamina for the long haul, you need plenty of reserve capital.  Enough said.
3. Get plenty of exercise.  How well-grounded is your idea.  Have you practiced enough, studied enough, had enough experience or can you hire the experience you will need?
4. Are you in love with your dream enough to see it through?
5. Gradually build up to your peak performance level.  I’m interpreting this to mean grow at a speed that you can handle.
6. Involve others.  Who is on your team?  Who is your main counselor/mentor?  Can you trust them?
7. Visualize.  Picture your dream and the goal-line.  This is perhaps one of the most important aspects for all of us in our pursuits.  It’s the old adage promoted by Napoleon Hill and Earl Nightingale - We become what we think about.

We MUST revisit our dream.  Picture the what, the how, and the end result.  After a great visualization session, it is amazing how our stamina can come back to life.

In closing, allow me to borrow from Stephen Covey’s book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.

Believe it or not, rest and reflection is just as important as driving hard every day.  Remember to “take time to sharpen the saw.”  Not only should we take days off, vacations and relaxation times, we also need to step back from the “in-your-face” view and gain a broader perspective.  From time to time we must go back and look at our blueprint to make sure we are building our dream according to the plan.
